The
APHA rule book provides that the states and
provinces will be divided into zones. Before
1984 there were only four zones and Zone One
consisted of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, Utah, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado
and New Mexico. Then changed to clubs in Alaska,
British Columbia, Alberta, Washington, Oregon,
Idaho and Montana. The current zones were reformed
in 2002 by the APHA Executive Committee at the
2002 APHA Convention and Zone One was made up
of clubs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana
until 2006 when British Columbia & Alaska
were added back into Zone One - with the boundaries
specified in the 2007 rule book. The Regional
Club Zone alignment back to five states &
British Columbia was done so the respective
zones could work together more efficiently.
During this period Zone O Rama rules were put
into effect. The reduced territory in the zones
helped make shows more feasible. APHA has zone
awards and AJPHA officers are elected from each
of the zones.
The
Zone One Representative Council was created
through the efforts of Mrs. Lyle (Butch) Wonderlich
in late 1984. In 1985 the first officers were
elected and Butch served as chairperson for
the first two years. Plans for the first Zone
One show were completed and Walla Walla was
selected as the most centrally located show
site. The show remained there four years. The
first few years were financially difficult but
by 1989 when the show moved to Olympia, WA it
was an established event. In 1997 the Zone One
Show moved from Salem, Oregon, where it had
been since 1992, to the new Linn County Fair
& Expo Center in Albany, OR. where it remained
until 2008 when it was voted to move the show
to the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa Idaho.
ZONE
ONE IS MORE THAN A HORSE SHOW. Zone
One was intended to be more than a horse show
every year. It was Butch's intent that this
group would be instrumental in drawing the Northwest
Regional Clubs together, assist in inter club
relations and Paint promotion. With the geographical
problems and getting started as a functional
group in the Northwest, these goals are just
now being realized. Financial stability, caused
by successful shows, allows promotional activities
for Paints throughout the area. The Zone One
Directory which provides club history, officers
and event information is just one example, this
publication was in use until 2004. The accomplishment
that Zone One is most proud of is the establishment
in 1996 of the first Zone One APHA YDF Scholarship
through the efforts of all member Zone One clubs
and a second Zone One APHA YDF Scholarship in
1997 through the efforts of the Zone One Club
Show Schooling Classes. This form of raising
money was started in Zone One and now has been
picked up by APHA for the use by other regional
clubs to raise money for their worthwhile causes.
In 2001 Zone One proudly announced that we had
fully funded our third Zone One APHA YDF Scholarship
and it was awarded by APHA in 2002. Again Zone
One proves that “WE ARE NUMBER ONE.”
At the regular Zone One Representative Council
meetings in December and February and other
meetings when necessary, each club has one director
and one alternate who are responsible for taking
information back to their clubs. Thank you to
each club and their members for their continuing
active support and participation in the Zone
One Representative Council.
MEMBER
OF DISTINCTION: At the February 2005
meeting it was voted to start an annual award
to recognize a member of Zone One with a Zone
One Distinguished Service Award. The 2007 Zone
One Member of the Year was Annie Suratt with
a Special Member Award presented to Kathy Allen
for all her work for Zone One.
At
the February 2008 Zone One Representative Council
meeting it was a unanimous vote to choose Don
Hill the 2008 Zone One Member of the Year. Don
gave many years to Zone one both at the meetings
and at our annual show. Thank you Don for all
you gave to Zone One - You will be missed. Don
passed away early this year.
Zone
One Zone-O-Rama: The 2005 Zone O Rama
was the largest Zone One Show ever held in Zone
One. Since 2001 this show has been one of the
Top Six APHA Shows in the Nation – in
2006 we were # 4. There are exhibitors from
all over the U.S. & Canada. The 2008 Zone
One Zone-O-Rama will be five days with six-judges
and will be held in August 20 - 24 at the Idaho
Horse Park in Nampa, ID. The Zone One Zone-O-Rama
is a show where exhibitors can earn APHA and
NWCC points and offers a full schedule of APHA
classes including cattle, Novice Youth, Novice
Amateur, Walk/Trot and Solid Paint Bred. Major
awards are awarded include High Point &
Reserve Awards, buckles and class average awards
to third place, plus high point overall awards.
Again this year the Zone-O-Rama will host
the Northwest Coordinating Committee Futurities.
